How to Use Your Network to Make a Career Change

Changing careers can be a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be done alone. It actually shouldn’t be done alone! Your personal and professional networks can be incredibly valuable resources as you navigate your way through a career transition. You might even discover roles you never knew existed.

Here are some tips for using your new and existing network to make a successful career change.

1. Identify your goals and target industries

Before reaching out to your network, take some time to explore your interests, skills, and values. This will help you identify the industries and roles that align with your career goals. Once you've identified your target industries, research the companies and professionals within those industries.

2. Reach out to your network

Once you've identified your target industries and professionals, it's time to reach out to your network. Start by letting your friends, family, and colleagues know about your career goals and the industries you're interested in. Ask if they know anyone who works in those industries, and if they can make an introduction.

Always, always, always be professional. Don’t expect free help, don’t be pushy, and don’t show your frustration. Be grateful and respectful whether they can help you now or not. It’s crucial to learn how to interact with professionals online.

3. Attend networking events

Attending industry events and conferences can be a great way to meet professionals in your target industries. Be sure to bring business cards and a clear elevator pitch that explains who you are and what you're looking for.

4. Conduct informational interviews

Informational interviews are a great way to learn more about specific industries and roles. Reach out to professionals in your target industries and ask if they would be willing to chat with you about their career path and industry insights.

Again, don’t expect free help from everyone. Be respectful to a “no” and grateful to a “yes.”

5. Follow up and stay connected

After making new connections, be sure to follow up with a thank you note or email. Keep in touch with your network and update them on your progress. You never know when a connection may lead to a job opportunity or a valuable introduction.

By leveraging your network and following these tips, you can successfully navigate a career change and find a job that aligns with your goals and interests. Keep checking those job boards, but you never know what can come out of a nurtured network.
